Celebrating 26 Years: Flowland’s Journey from Counter-Culture Startup to Local Staple

This year, Flowland marks an incredible milestone—26 years of serving the Sandhills with good vibes, counter-culture spirit, and a one-of-a-kind shopping experience! From our beginnings in 2000 as a funky startup on Morganton Rd in Southern Pines, NC, to our move down US 1 to Aberdeen in 2014, and fast becoming a beloved local staple, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the journey, the community, and the passion that’s fueled us every step of the way.
The Early Days: A Vision Takes Root
Back in 2000, Flowland opened its doors with a mission to bring something truly different to Moore County. We started as a “hemporium”—based on a small shop we saw in travels between jobs. The shop we visited had a wide assortment of goods made from hemp: not the kind you know today, but hemp clothing, snacks, accessories, and other textile goods that hemp was known for back in the day. We carried a few smoke shop items as well, but our main focus was hemp… WAY before its time.
The focus quickly morphed into a counter-culture department store, with goods to match the needs of the Sandhills as it continued to grow. From hand blown glass pipes to disc golf gear, skateboards and funky tapestries and black lights, Flowland became a destination for the region. We had stuff no one even thought about carrying back then—and still do today! We moved to Aberdeen in 2014, expanded the offerings, and kept growing. Eventually the skateboard side grew into its own entity, N2Flow Skateboards, and we expanded offerings to crystals, more home decor, and metaphysical goods.
Growing With the Community
Over the years, Flowland has evolved alongside Aberdeen and the greater Sandhills region. We’ve expanded our departments, added new products, and built lasting relationships with customers and local makers. From the early days of skateboards and tie-dye tees to today’s shelves stocked with hemp flower, CBD gummies, crystals, and disc golf essentials, our commitment to quality and discovery has never wavered.
